AASHTO Strut and Tie – Principles of Pier Cap D-Region Design

Learning objectives:

  • Review basic strut and tie design principles.

  • Learn about implementing strut and tie design in the design of pier caps.

  • Learn about implementing strut and tie design in load rating existing pier caps and hinged joints.

Presenters:

Daniel Baxter, PE, SE is a Senior Bridge Engineer and Bridge Department Manager at Michael Baker International.  He is a certified instructor for the NHI Strut and Tie Modeling course.  Shayla Olson, PE is a Bridge Engineer at Michael Baker International.  Together they have implemented strut and tie model design into various MnDOT projects.
