Abstract:
After 10 years of planning, risk assessments, and design, the Minnesota DNR began reconstruction of the Lake Bronson Dam in 2024. This is believed to be the largest single infrastructure project ever undertaken by the agency. Located in Lake Bronson State Park in Kittson County, the dam is one of two high hazard dams owned by the state. Its reservoir is one of the most significant outdoor recreation features in far northwest Minnesota. Built in 1937, the dam’s original spillway is undersized and is being completely replaced, and the embankment was exhibiting signs of seepage leading to the placement of a deep cutoff wall. The presentation will address aspects of public sector design and construction in Minnesota, including lessons learned from the risk assessment and decision making process, and the detailed design and construction phases.
